What People Say About Us
We are Bexley Mencap.
We believe in a world where all people with a learning disability are respected, valued and empowered to live life to the full.
Founded in 1971 by parents who wanted to increase the opportunities for their children with learning disabilities in the borough, we have grown to become the local voice of learning disability in Bexley.
We have developed a depth of knowledge, skill, and expertise to support people with learning disabilities (our members), and their loved ones, and we pride ourselves on remaining a person-centred, community focused organisation that delivers high quality services.
All of our work is based on our values, which help us to shape and deliver high quality services at all times:
- Empowering: We aim to support everybody to grow, develop and reach their full potential
- Approachable: When people need us, we are there and we make it easy for them to get support
- Person-centered: People with a learning disability and their loved ones are at the heart of everything we do
- Passionate: We are dedicated to improving the lives of the people we support Respectful: We treat everyone who comes into contact with our organisation with dignity and respect
The thoughts, views and aspirations of our members are at the heart of everything that we do. We work to provide the support and opportunities our members and the people that care about them need locally, as well as working to raise awareness, break down barriers and promote understanding within the community. From 121 support, help with healthcare and benefits, independent living, family support, and healthy lifestyles including social activities and sporting groups, all of our work is designed by and for our members, helping them to live life to the full.

There have been many changes for people with a learning disability in recent years and there are likely to be more in the future. It is vital that our work continues to not only support people to navigate these changes and to live the life they want to lead, but that we also continue to campaign and empower people with a learning disability to speak up and be heard so that they may influence and shape their future and the future for others with learning disabilities.
